30 September 2009 was the 10th anniversary of closure of Newcastle Steelworks. A commemorative event was held at the Muster Point Sculpture, and a reunion was held at Mayfield Sports Club.]]>

Since the mid 1860’s many smelters have operated in Newcastle. The abundance of coal as a fuel, a ready workforce, a good supply of water, and harbour access for transport justified bringing ores to Newcastle, particularly copper, then silver, lead and zinc, followed by iron for making steel.]]>

Thousands of workers have called “The Workshops” home over the years and during its peak over 3000 people worked on this site, making it the states largest employer at the time. “The Workshops” are now Queensland’s newest tourist attraction and the latest campus of the Queensland Museum. The Museum is state of the art and totally interactive. Behind the scenes tours are available and are a must if you visit the workshops, they are The Blacksmiths, Wagon and Carriage and Steam Shop.
