  • William the Fourth
William the Fourth The original William the Fourth was the first steam powered ocean-going vessel built in Australia - in 1831 - built at Clarencetown. The replica paddlewheel steamship William the Fourth was constructed at Raymond Terrace in 1987 as a regional Bi-centenary project. The replica operated for 14 years on Newcastle Harbour using the steam engine and side paddles, which provided limitations in a modern environment. The ship is owned by William the Fourth Inc., a community based organisation that will complete the restoration of the timber structure and install twin 160kw diesel engines with propellers before returning the ship to service in commercial survey. The historic character and significance of the ship make it the perfect vessel to showcase the history and panoramas of the city from the water. The ship will be berthed at Honeysuckle adjacent to and complementing the new Maritime Centre. The restored William the Fourth will become a significant tourist attraction for Newcastle. The ship will have a strong active presence both on the water and at the wharf. It will conduct VIP corporate charters, short stay tourist group charters, special charters to other destinations, (eg Lake Macquarie & Port Stephens), as well as being a shore-side venue for conference catering and special functions. At other times it will open as an alongside exhibition of early steam ship technology in conjunction with the Maritime Centre. An accredited training program will be implemented to provide qualified deck crew to operate the ship. The cost to return the ship to modern operational standards is significant. In addition to funds provided by Newcastle City Council and present valuable offers of assistance, an additional $150,000 is required. This is clearly achievable through a series of targeted fund-raising strategies. The restored ship will be significantly improved in several ways over its previous operations. It will be safer, more reliable, more manoeuvrable, cleaner and much more capable of generating income than previously. As Newcastle continues to grow and become a destination for more visitors, William the Fourth will return to its role as a proud iconic symbol on the harbour of this region’s maritime history and achievements. I've just found this which may be of iterest to you as well http://guides.naa.gov.au/resources/gu.../front.htm

    Christine

Can I make a suggestion regarding books on Walsh Island DY - try the Newcastle Regional Library, or the University of Newcastle Library, As far as State Records go the lady should try the Mitchell library in Sydney as they hold all of the state records. However a point here - to get the best result from any search she should be as specific as possible.
    Regards,

Hi Mate, sadly we had to close our Forum because of( Bad Posts) I have asked our members if they can help………Aub
I will also place your request on our site today, hopefully you will get some answers.

Can any of our members help Christine

I have just joined your site with the intention of seeking some information from the knowledgeable through the Forum. I may be just dim but for the life of me I can't figure out how to post a question - no button I could find. SO, here is my question and maybe you can help.

My grandfather, Thomas Robert Vaughan Hughes, worked as an accountant at Walsh Island, roughly between 1925 and 1930 (just as it was about to go down the gurgler), and I am trying to find some more info about the place other than the general story such as the one on your website. Do you know if anyone has written a more lengthy history. I would love to get hold of it if such a thing existed. There doesn't seem to be a lot out there. I imagine any records of his actual employment would be held somewhere in the NSW Gov archives if they exist at all today. Hoping you have an idea where I might look.

    Regards

HISTORY: The man who forged a city  View Printable Version
    Friday, April 12 2013 @ 09:24 AM
    Contributed by: aub

    Sir,
Once again Mike Scanlon has pulled the heart strings of the “Men and Women of Steel” who helped this build this great city we call Newcastle.
When I take visitors to the Muster Point on the BHP site, I often hear the comment “Remember When” and then the stories begin to flow.

Employees records show that in 1922, 840 worked on that site and produced 223.525 tonnes of Raw Steel, when I started there in 1961, 10.964 were employed by the company and that did not include contractors (Brambles etc) Raw Steel Tonnes were at 1.332.969 tonnes.
1982 saw 10.668 employees on site and 2.158.612 Raw Steel tonnes produced.

In 2015 the Newcastle Industrial Association hopes to unveil a Memorial to those who lost their lives on the plant, where the people of Newcastle can go and reflect on the
Steel Industry and the thousands of Novocastrians who worked there.

Yes, David Baker may have been the man who forged a city but it was the “Men and Women of Steel” who kept the fire alight for decades.

The BHP in Newcastle is gone forever but these stories must be preserved forever, I congratulate the Herald and Mike Scanlon for making this possible again.

The Brooks family had in total 125 years service at Newcastle BHP. Starting in 1915.

    Testimonial:

I was deeply moved to visit the Muster Point which was an important reminder of the proud history of Newcastle's steel-making industry. For years I have driven past the point and yet I didn't even know it was there.

I think it's really important for more people to be aware of Newcastle's history and to learn of the personal stories behind the men and women who worked there.

Thanks to Aub who took time to show me the Muster Point. It definitely gave me goosebumps when I walked inside!

    Hello Aubrey,

A note to say thank you very much for your presentation with Peg's support, to our Club, Tomaree Probus, today at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club.

The subject of BHP and steel production is so tightly entwined in the history of Newcastle and its development that your talk struck a chord with every one present. The responses I've had from members todate have all been positive and I believe Allen Beard is planning to include the muster point tour on his future trips plan for the club.

I've attached a copy of our March Newsletter and suggest you look at p. 11 where the BHP / Newcastle Heritage talk is listed. All Probus clubs in our area receive a copy of this newsletter.

I look forward to seeing you again soon

    Kind regards

    Happy new Year!

To celebrate our Credit Union turning 50 this year on 10th October 2013.

We need help, we are looking for photos of the Hunter United Credit and its staff at Newcastle BHP, it is now 50 years since they began,

We wish to share any stories, anecdotes, pictures and recollections of our credit union. Especially its early times… in the good old days! We are excited about what we may discover and think it is a wonderful way to bring our members and community together.

The HUCU helps us every year with the BHP Reunion, it would be great if you have any information that can help,

    Regards…………Aub

Member Contributions/Member Competition – we are very much looking forward to discovering and sharing our history with the community, but initially we need help. On the back of our Member competition which featured on the front page of the newsletter and also on the homepage of our website, we are after contributions………..whether it be stories, an old membership card, photos etc. from the good old days. I would ask you if the NIHA or indeed your many contacts would have something to contribute, old credit union photos’, perhaps stories of their first loan, we are interested in any contributions no matter how large or small. There is a special gift for all contributions as well as a major prize of an iphone5 for the most valuable contribution.

Again thanks for your time Aub, and I appreciate your passion for our history, we did discuss many other opportunities, but I think for now if we are to focus on the above that would be a great start to what will be a busy and exciting year.

    Subject: One Ladies priceless tale.

    Sir,
It was with great interest that I read Mike Scanlon story on Saturday, the wonderful story of Mrs Pauline Lobb, daughter of a “Man of Steel” as I read the story it reminded of my
Grandfather Jimmy Massie who started at the BHP on the 2nd June 1915 and worked there for 37 years.

Yes, there are many historic objects and as Bob Cook, President of NIHA points out, very rare, but these are only material things but the real value is the people and the stories they tell,
When Mrs Lobb spoke of her Mummy and Daddy so sweet. She made me feel very proud to belong to the Steel Family

Not too long ago, Mr Scanlon wrote of Walter Searles another BHP Steel Man who is 91. In September it will be 14 years since the BHP closed in Newcastle and as time passes
we should never forget the people who lost their lives there not forgetting those who were badly injured never to fully recover they helped build this great country we call Australia.
It’s not about the Company but the people who worked and the Unions who fought for better OH&S laws to protect their workers.

The BHP in Newcastle is gone forever but these stories must be preserved forever, I congratulate the Herald and Mike Scanlon for making this possible.

The Brooks family had 125 years at Newcastle BHP, I really hope the Mrs Lobb can make it to this year’s BHP Reunion, and I love the Letter opener too.

THE MUSTER POINT....Wheel Chair Friendly...Chairs Provided....Easy Walking...There are no Toilets there.

Commencing in July 1998, Squires’ work was not complete until September 1999 – such was the time needed to win support for the project from a number of departments within BHP, onsite contractors, to gain DA and BA approval from the local council and to also fabricate what is a very large structure. Made from more than 70 tonnes of BHP steel, the eight-metre high sculpture (measuring 8m x 12m x 8m) is an imposing structure. The exterior has a stylised representation of the BHP skyline encased within the design element of a BHP maintenance shop. Inside there are a number of references to the people and place of the steelworks such that as former employees visit with their family they can take them on a tour of their working lives. It is illuminated at night. For images of The Muster Point see Julie Squires' website.
