Newcastle Industrial Heritage Association is launching a project to produce a
permanent memorial to workers who lost their lives at the Newcastle Steelworks and
related steel industries between 1915 and 1999.
It is proposed that the suitably respectful large memorial will be located at a
prominent location in the vicinity of the steelworks site, and we are currently
    discussing options with stakeholders.
We are holding a public function to launch a fund-raising drive and a memorial design
competition, at the ‘Muster Point’ sculpture, corner Selwyn St and Industrial Drive
Mayfield, at 11am on Thursday 2 June 2011 (this is the 96th anniversary of the
    opening of the steelworks).
The brief official launch of the project, which will recognise the value that the steel
industry and it’s people provided to this region, as well as commemorating the
memory of past workers and celebrate the 96th anniversary of commencement of our
steel industry, will be followed by a luncheon at the Muster Point.
