When the first ever Labour Government was elected in NSW in 1910, it began a program of social and industrial change that changed the face of Australia. The Walsh Island Dockyard was part of the grand design to use political force to control the standard of living of the workers. Walsh Island's role in Newcastle's development is almost forgotten, but it is a most important part of our history.
